Good morning peeps :)

New running style; shoe wise - a reduced distance this morning, this is my first run in zero drop/barefoot shoes, I am glad I started my transition from a cushioned shoe, by going to a minimal cushion back in January

My immediate reaction of barefoot shoes, is that you are doing the running, there is more feedback to your feet, and the foot strike is very much like being without shoes - but, it was a heap of fun to run!

I dumped my coach in November, mostly for financial reasons, but also due to the fact that he's anti-data and anti-tech. He's very much a pro-RPE acolyte. It doesn't vibe with my math and data analysis brain.

I'm #running the Chicago Marathon this October and will be following a power-based training plan by Steve Palladino. His plan includes V̇O₂ max workouts, supra-threshold, sub-threshold, HMP, MP, and lots of easy running.

I'm curious to see how my RSB falls out.

Here is my running stress balance while coached. This is found by scoring each run with a stress score, finding a rolling 7-day average ("fatigue"), a rolling 42-day average ("fitness"), and calculating "fatigue minus fitness".

Notice the time spent in the Maintenance band of training versus the time in Productive.

This is frustrating, because hiring a coach is expensive. I want to see progress, but it didn't happen, and I now know why.

From Dec 1, 2022 to Dec 1, 2024 I was coached for attempting a sub-3 hour marathon. My PR up to that point was 3:21:31. However, the best my coach could get out of me during this time was 3:12:09.

As the training was progressing, I was skeptical that he was pushing me as hard as he could. Many of the workouts, while challenging, were achievable.

I tried suggesting adjustments, such as V̇O₂ max workouts and running doubles, but they fell on deaf ears.

Found a blip of light in the dark.

Last saturday I destroyed my knee. At km 35 of 42 it felt like my knee got stabbed by a knife. Stubborn (stupid) as I am I kept going (on a slower pace) to finish my run. On sunday my knee was still wrecked. Monday I did some exercises to see if it would help with recovery. Today I finally felt good enough for a little shuffle, which went well.

I am trying to do at least 60km of running a week this year. We'll see how far I get this week. Don't wanna push to hard and create a long term injurie.

For the introverts among us.

❝I think there are more people who like the sport because they’re alone, but we’re not the people who loudly tell everybody, ‘I LOVE THIS SPORT BECAUSE I’M ALONE. ALL THE TIME!’

Surprised myself by running over 10 km for the first time in yonks! And at a good pace - under 6 minutes per kilometer (that’s over 10 km/hour when translated ). Which was my goal when I started up again only a few weeks ago. #running

If you are running regularily, sports analytics comes handy to improve your training. Iztok Fister has written a number of applications that analyze data coming from your sports watches. Especially comprehensive is the Python application sport-activities-features on GitHub. It even uses OSM data. Great :)

Tuesday #Workout:
200 seconds of plank.
11 mins of yoga for runners.
10 mins of strength training.
15.4 KM of #Running (-6°C, -10°C windchill, 100% humidity, and 8 km/hr wind).

Plank was tough this morning; abs were mad at me from yesterday’s go of it after the vacation.

Run was great; changed route up due to Rideau River flooding, and was unintentionally faster than my goal (7:00/km), though I was slowing down after 12 KMs. Keeping an eye on my HR is … exhausting until I can run coat-free.
