M. L. Clark
Bit of a bleak one today. I’ve been mulling over this concept all week: the notion that we shouldn’t expect future societies to vindicate us in the stories they tell of our era. We might very well be on the “wrong side of history” when it comes to how common and persistent human cruelty is - but that’s no good reason not to resist it, however and whenever we can.

#Humanism #WorldGrief #Religion #Philosophy

https://open.substack.com/pub/mlclark/p/being-on-the-wrong-side-of-history

I never made the claim you said I made. I have had experiences that were religious, plenty of times. I just understand that upon rational introspection, and with the knowledge that magic doesn't exist, in the real world, those experiences weren't magical, and that I would be mistaken to alter my life, my behavior towards others, and my entire world-view, as if it was real. Which is what religions, as far as my deep, historical, research has demonstrated, to me, always do.

I've further come to understand how the human mind is a flawed pattern-seeking machine. Math and science simply record those patterns, for all humans, in a way that doesn't rely on personal interpretations, which you, me, and every other human being will cling to, because they feel most correct.

The hubris may actually be on the side of the religious experience of an individual human, being important to anyone, other than that human being.

#humanism

Just to exist, contrary to the science that you go on to laud, and give credit for expanding human beings' understating of the universe?

It seems logical to claim that all religions impede our understanding, by rejecting a method, based in study, reason, and the humane applications of this incomplete wisdom, in favor of a claims of wisdom, that are magical, complete, and that accept only another human beings' testimony, opinion and bias, as evidence, and that have been, historically, used as tools of oppression, hatred, and murder.

For thousands of years.

#humanism #rationalhumanism
